quote

"Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim"
-Nora Ephron via thatkindofwoman

This pretty much summarizes this semester for me! Either you can let life beat you up, or you can learn from the challenges and failures and move on. Embrace the hardships because they sculpt you to be the person God has created you to be. Be the heroine, but be humble enough to tell God that you can't succeed on your own.

I haven't written in awhile, but I hope all is well :)

What I learned this week: finals, soap operas, and airplanes

This is a super belated post. Actually it pretty much takes the cake... 9 days late? Oops. A testament to how crazy everything was in the past week.

This week I completed a final project for one of the most important classes I will ever have, and it went well, I am happy to report. Actually went much better than either my partner or I expected. And why was this the case? Well, the surprise stemmed from the fact that the last week had been a soap opera of sorts. Okay, no one died and no one got pregnant, but about all the other elements were there. I don't like soap operas. I like being in them even less. Short story of it all is that people can change their minds and their emotions quickly. Soon the person that is being cruel and harsh and consequently delaying your project can turn around and come help WITH the project for the last push..overnight. God is teaching me a lot about patience and forgiveness. And he blew me away this week with his provisions and grace and love.

So this week I learned:

...God truly is good, all the time.

...it is always possible for life to get busier, crazier, and more stressful than it is at the moment. Or at least the incorporation of a different crazy will inevitably happen. So enjoy the moments you have. Take a walk. Don't forget to breathe.

...I have one of the most ridiculously awesome support systems in the universe, I swear. I was so stressed and overwhelmed this week. But u was completely blown away by how many texts, calls and messages I got of encouragement or prayer. And my mom deserves the 'Mother of the Century' award for how much she encouraged me. Calling me and praying for me over the phone is one of the biggest blessings ever.

....laundry should always be done pre-finals.

... When planning to wear rain boots on the walk, be prepared that they will still be on your feet in class, and you will want to cut a hole in them and install a mini air conditioning unit. Bring flats in your backpack to change into.

... The airport seems to be an excellent place for people-watching these days. My favorites are the adorable older couples who get carted around on the little golf carts. Especially when they hold hands.

... I cannot tell you how excited I am to meet my grandpa at the airport an go home for a late lunch with him and my grandma. Actually this will probably not be published until after that happens. But really, super excited.

... I am slowly learning to trust God withy he plans he has for me. It's difficult to know when to wait for an answer versus when to decide. But my mom always tells me it's a lot easier to steer a bike the right direction if it's moving.

... I will never learn to start packing earlier. My roommates are saints for dealing with my chaos. Also, a word to the wise: don't schedule your flight home for 6:00 am the morning after your last final, unless you have time and motivation to expertly pack up your entire apartment before said final. Two hours of sleep is never enough.

.... I cannot even begin to explain how excited I am to go back to Minneapolis and the beautiful state of Minnesota which I love so much. Yes, I am very biased because it's my home, but there is no where like Minneapolis. Albany, you're great but you totally don't cut it. Where are your lakes? Where are your food trucks? Why aren't you using your river? Why is it completely strange to smile or talk to strangers? I don't understand... but thankfully I'm going for a little respite to a place filled with people I understand a bit more.

... Southwest is definitely my favorite carrier yet. Actually friendly, free baggage, and they still give you peanuts and tasty beverages. Shape up US airlines, you're leaving me high and dry. Literally.

Welcome Home

Third day home from college, every day has had a little happiness {or two} of its own.

Day 1- the day I got picked up from school.  And this pup came with to get me:

Etta, my 2 year old Golden Retriever.
Day 2- Skipping rocks on the river.  Peaceful with sunny sparkles.  I also found a nice sized agate, which is always an accomplishment.

Day3- Writing in my quote book {inspirationally speaking}.  Good additions.  I also discovered {or re-discovered, maybe} that waking up to rain just beginning to fall and pound on your roof mixed with wind and a purring cat is a very good way to wake up.

Also prayer.  Prayer is very good.  And powerful.  And the connection you get to people through prayer is fantastic.  God is good!

Things I learned this week: dreams, wheat, and set-ups.

I'm a little late on this post. Eh, it's still the start of the week.

So this week I learned....

....I am really really stupid and gullible when I first wake up in the morning. I'm serious. I've been fabricated these elaborate dreams in my head which incorporate my alarm and some reason I need to shut it off or hit snooze 500 times.. My favorites? Dream A: It is quiet hours for finals, and that includes all alarms and other loud noises over a certain decibel level. Alarms aren't allowed to go off from 11:00 pm until 7:00 am.. so my 6:00 am wake up time needs to be delayed in order to avoid getting into trouble. Problem? Not even finals week. ...and quiet hours are usually instated to deter loud/drunken/obnoxious people rather than those that are getting up early to study...    Dream B: My alarm is secretly linked to the lasercutter, and every time it goes off it's just signalling that my file is cut; hitting snooze starts cutting the next file. Yeah, pathetic archie dreams, I know. But I believe them. Wholeheartedly (at 6:00 am).

...the Ultimate NPR Workout Mix exists. It's hilarious and amazing. I've heard everything from 80s grunge pop to Prince to Eminem (yeah...that happened) to current indie pop. It probably would be a great workout mix if I were running right now,.. but as is, it's serving as entertainment and an attempt to keep me upbeat and awake :)

....wheat might not be that great for you? Blew my mind.  I read this book called Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Way Back to Health. Actually, I'm half lying. I read the first two and a half chapters (what was free online) ..but I'm thinking of getting the actual book. What he says actually makes some sense... Wheat is the common denominator in a lot of things. So, for the next few weeks (or days.. or however long it lasts..) I'm going to try to eliminate most wheat from my diet. Obviously I won't be going cold turkey right away, but it's an experiment. No, I'm not exactly looking to lose weight (I don't have much to lose....) but he wrote about how it increases energy and helps eliminate that sluggish sleepy feeling, and also helps athletes and runners. Also it improves digestion and keeps your insulin levels steady (no more drastic energy swings and crashes throughout the day). Eh, I figured it was enough to try. So here goes day 1...I'll get back to you on all that....

....thanks to my friend Greg, I am officially hooked on almond milk lattes. There is nothing better than sipping that sweet, amazing coffee-infused foam off the top of my mug at home. Instant happy.

....even though I go to a very young church (read: everyone either in college or recently out of college, kids all under the age of 15..most much younger than that), there is still the possibility of getting set up with someone's son out of the blue. Yep... I'll get back to you on all that later... Life is an adventure, I tell ya.

... the weather seems to be completely bipolar. Freezing last week, warm this week? I've gone back and forth between my winter coat/scarf/warm boots and crops/t-shirt/flats in rapid speed.

...coffee with a mentor can do wonders for your weekend. Also, being a regular at said coffee shop just makes my life better. Scratch that... I've become a regular/known-by-name at all three main coffee shops downtown. Life is good.. .and caffeinated apparently.

...I am incredibly good at making myself homesick. Lisa can probably attest to that. I neeeed to stay away from The Current, The Vita.mn and the Star Tribune while I'm away... but I can't. Guess I'll just have to head home soon then .... ;)

...more learning to come this week. Lessons of patience and humility seem to be tailor-made for me lately. But God is good and faithful. And that's all I need.

Love from the east coast,

- Angie

Pre-Finals Happy List

Hey there girls!
I'm  posting twice - twice! - in a row. That's pretty exciting. Actually, studying for material for the driest class on earth is not exciting, which is precisely why I am posting. I decided that what I really really needed to do at this very moment was share some videos and songs that just make me abundantly happy and semi-motivated. ...Which stems from me a) not wanting to do work at the moment, b) really loving these songs, and c) really desiring to get re-motivated as I have a test tomorrow.....

So here they are, generally starting from pretty and peaceful to let's-get-dancing. I'll keep it short. But please enjoy these happy songs :)

Much love from the East Coast,
Angie

first installment: things I learned this week

Hey there amazing sisters,
I decided that I need something to get me motivated to blog semi-regularly. So I decided to have a series I'll title "Things I learned this week." And it will be just that... everything from the random, to the (hopefully) insightful, to the funny... etc. Hopefully it will be fun. And hopefully we will learn something. And most of all, hopefully I will post at decent intervals. Plus... I am much more apt to post something of bullet-point style rather than paragraphs. Because sometimes my randomness really is not cohesive...and at the end of the week I have difficulties being poignant. But we shall hope :)

So, things I learned this week:
  • Coconut milk does not froth well for lattes and cappuccinos. Don't get me wrong, it is absolutely delicious, and Silk did a good job creating it... but my cappuccino was un-frothy and sad today. Delicious, but sad. Lesson learned: buy skim, almond or soy milk, and all is happy and frothy again.

  • When baking cookies (from an amazing Levain Bakery copy-cat recipe) and intending to post about them on an blog you share with amazing sisters, take pictures of them BEFORE you even start eating them. Otherwise they will be devoured by your-chocolate-craving-self everyone in your apartment and studio before you can clickety-click with your camera. But no worries, those cookies will be made again. They were epicly good. And that's saying something. I have recipe ADD... I'm always looking for a different one. Making the same one twice (unless it's Grandma's recipe) is a rarity.
  • A strong Christian community is one of the best and strongest bonds you can have. Find one, make it yours, develop it deeply, and it will shock you with strength and love at the most random lovely times and the hardest times. Amazing.
  • Pride and Prejudice is always good. Especially on rainy days when you are permanently chilled to the bone and have a couple hours to sit, "work" on your project, wrap yourself in a giant comforter and drink tea. Need a pick-me-up? I'd recommend that.
  • My favorite feel-inspired-be-happy blog of the week is designlovefest. She's darling, a great graphic designer, and all-around cute person.
  • Throwing hot water, spices, spinach, chickpeas, and cous cous into a tupperware container before you run out the door provides a great lunch in the middle of the day when you have no moolah and you just want fresh yumminess. Thank you cheap, quick, college food.
  • Biking up all the hills of Troy in a little one-speed bike is a great way to get tired really quick attempt to get into shape quickly. But hey, at least my bike still looks cute at the top of the hill to make up for me looking sweaty and exhausted :)
  • Minnesota does thunderstorms better.
That is all! Happy Sunday!

National Siblings Day

HAPPY SIBLINGS DAY! I was attempting to get organized and was writing in my planner today. I noticed that on April 10th, it said "NATIONAL SIBLINGS DAY". I thought that it would be appropriate that I post this since we are practically related ;) Anyways, it is a good day to be a sibling and have siblings, cause this day is for all of us. I miss you all dearly and I hope that you girls are having a good week!

food for thought pertaining to blogs: part 2

Hey girls!
So I've basically been MIA for a couple weeks now, as my life begins to get crazier than it has ever been, and I struggle to rely on God's grace and provision even more. Life is chaos. Beautiful, but utterly chaotic.

I found this, and I immediately thought of the last post. I thought it was a really eloquent way of describing the situation and environment of a blog.

“There’s something sacred about reading a blog post on someone else’s site. It’s like visiting a friend’s house for a quick meal ’round the breakfast table. It’s personal — you’re in their space, and the environment is uniquely suited for idea exchange and uninterrupted conversation. In many ways, we should be treating our blogs like our breakfast tables. Be welcoming & gracious when you host, and kind & respectful when visiting.”
– Trent Walton

I think it's really important that we set up what we want our blog to be, how we want to communicate to the world in our little corner of the internet, and how we want to honor one another, God, our community and beyond by what we post. it's easy to shrug off responsibility of a blog when there seem to be billions out there, few which ever get read often. But it is important all the more. When someone does read or look, it is essential they are reading or looking at something that we can be proud of.

(And welcome Rach and Kierlyn! I'm super excited both of you get to share this with us! Love you both to pieces!)

Set Apart Girl

A friend of mine recently directed me to this website:

http://www.setapartgirl.com/home.html

Leslie Ludy, (along with her husband,) is the author of When God Writes Your Love Story, (which I hear  is a captivating read). She is also the founder of Set Apart Girl, a magazine directed at young women that love the Lord and desire to surrender everything they have to Jesus. The most recent edition convicted me about how I'm... blogging. Right? I know. Check it out!

Angie, Rachel, Kierlyn, and I love the Lord. We want everything we do to honor our Savior King! This blog is a testimony of our lives regardless of what we post, so may we be faithful to echo love and radiate the Spirit of the Living God. We live in abundance. :]

Mud-Trail Dazzle

I ran today.
It's been a long while, but I had to do a 20 minute workout for a college physicial wellness course, so I chose to start up my re-revving of the ol' endurance.
I ran to Christmas music and Josh Garrells.
I found out I haven't used my Shuffle since around December 25th.

But last night? Last night I made apple crisp. Apple crisp with sugar. Lots.

I wanted apples and I wanted dessert, {because I always want dessert,} so kitchen experimentation began with cast iron, flour, oats, an apple, brown&white sugar, milk, and olive oil.

Grandpa and Grandma liked it. I thought the oatmeal to sugar ratio was off. {Life's oatmeal to sugar ratio is generally off.}

Hope you're feeling the blessings today. :]

DIY Gripped Collage Water Bottle

I've never been a fan of the term "up-cycle". It's been floating about the blogging community for a while now. The word is so... grease-spot-on-a-cardboard-box. There are great words out there; lavish,  ferocious, cream, Donegal, Inuit, etc. These kinds of words are so... run-your-fingertips-'cross-willow-bark. They are nice terms. Why on earth could we not call the remake/redo/upcycling stuff something relishable? Popular things should sound lovely as well as clever. However, I cannot think of anything truly brilliant to replace it, so I'll speak no further.

On the topic...

I amped up my freebie water bottle received upon transferring schools. Now it has a collage of blue wrapped in silicone. We all adore Mod-Podge, but in this case the silicone layer gets the water bottle grippable, making it great for athletics without the hassle of being too sticky and covered in fuzz. {Fuzz. Another excellent word. Fuzz fuzz fuzz.}

Monster Cookie

My portion of this blog is slipping, this I know. Angie was getting ahead of me and knew it was time to take what I had, {weekend sunlight,} and throw together a post. {Light has valuable properties of motivation for me.}
In regard to my mention of the recent thriftventures:
My thrifting secret?
Come closer.
Now read the next part in your best whisper:
Look for the grandma shirts.
Yep. If it's a plain, basic color and a shirt that looks like it's made for the feminine 60+ category, you're in business. Oh, examples? Consider the following:

Pair with heels.

~~Okay- gotta dash!
Here's what I've been recently praying for:
Increased humility & wisdom. I need it. Praise the Lord for His hastening of our growth. <3
"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up."
"But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy, Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."
"Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things."

Pesky shoe addictions

I seem to have a fettish with menswear-inspired shoes lately. Perhaps too much. It's led me to add Bass oxfords, some ridiculously comfy Eastland loafers, and some Caterpillar boots? ... I think between the three I maybe spent $46. (Yes, I'm magic... refer to previous thrifting post.. ) Anyway, I've revisited my love of men's shoes and currently I'm especially enthralled by Bass and all of the wonderful shoes they make. All of them last forever, are easy on the eyes, and easy on the feet. Sometimes they can get kind of spendy, but if you work some magic and get them at DSW on super super sale or find them for cheap second-hand, they are more than worth it to have in your closet. Jeans + Bass + simple tee + comfy blazer = easy morning dressing, and a look laid back and dressed up all at the same time. (PS.. I may have accidentally purchase the bottom left pair tonight.. but I found them for $14! ... I caved. I knew I was never going to find that again... found them on style.ly.. which if you haven't checked out yet, do it! Sign up here.  Sometimes you can find great stuff for cheap, and even cheaper if you earn some credits. It definitely just knocked $10 off my last purchase. I think that's worth it.)

Bass current favorites

Bass winged shoes, $79. Bass rubber soled shoes, 130 CAD, Bass boots, $70, Bass Weejun Penny Loafer, $150, Bass Men's Carlisle Boat Shoe: Shoes, $100, Bass Women's Rachel Antonoff Alice Oxford - Black, $45

Sister Love

Guess what Kaelie and I have in common? It's also what most likely made us friends in the first place (other than the fact that we lived in the same neighborhood). We both have younger sisters the same age. And they are both amazing.

And I got to talk to mine tonight. How encouraging it is to talk to someone who knows you well, who knows what you desire out of life, where you've been, ....and whom you can make an infinite number of silly faces at and they won't care. That's love, people.

Anyway, more on the wonders of sisterhood later. For now I wanted to share a video my sister shared with me, which made me laugh, cry, want to drive to the nearest barn, catch up with all my friends, and pray ever-more fervently for the man I'll marry someday. This video is of a couple's wedding, and gives a glimpse at their beautiful relationship, and most of all faith. It challenged me a lot. This is what life is about - God is Lord of all, and we have the joy of knowing and loving him back and lavishing love on other people. So grab a tissue (or four) and enjoy:

lovely things, things of joy.

I must say, life is crazy. However, to the degree it is crazy, it is also beautiful.

So here are a few things that have made life lovely and joyful in the past week:

...the dusting of snow that lasted for all of 30 minutes this morning. But it was beautiful for those fleeting moments

... my Bialetti moka. It has been a sort of saviour to my mornings. It's that taste of espresso, and the way I've discovered I can froth milk within my blender (with a small spoon of nutella), which helps me get up in the mornings. It puts a spring in my step as I hike down the hill to work or study.

....speaking of things that put a spring in my step. I've only recently started to listen to my ipod on my walks to school. I don't know why I didn't earlier. It makes my walks much faster, and certain songs just make me smile as I walk to school. And this song by the incredible Peter Fox has made me especially happy today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD0A2plMSVA

...Chocolate soy milk. a half glass and I'm instantly happier. (especially since there is a new deal on chocolate soy milk which is a whole dollar cheaper than usual. my wallet and I are both happy that way.)

.... adorable blogs that make me smile and hope for simple beauty, bright colors, and warm hugs. That's a lot to ask of any website, but sometimes it happens. Example for tonight? http://www.designlovefest.com/ It's very easy on the eyes.

...mail from my grandparents. They have an especially good talent at making trivial things seem so wonderful. Like getting packages of kleenex, homemade cookies in unique tins, and small notes that come detached from the package a day later because 'Grandpa sealed the box too quickly." And what made me really happy, was one of the typical random stories my Grandma wrote. She said she had gone thrifting with Grandpa, and she found a 'Gucci' purse for $15. ...Fifteen is a lot at a thrift store. But it was leather, and Grandpa persuaded her to buy it. And then they went to to department store to see if it was legitimate. The saleswoman said a similar bag was worth $1,500 and that 'someone didn't know what they had.' How adorable is that? My grandma is nervous about a $15 purchase and it ends up being worth that.. but with a couple zeros at the end.

...and this idea. I really want to take  my friends when I'm back home and photograph them and their closets. I think it would be such a good way to get to know them better, have a fantastic time, and share a piece of them and all their joy with the world... or at least to my realm of friends. I think that would be a beautiful project, however long it lasts. Here is a look at the website that gave me the idea:  http://closetvisit.com/

.... and finally, I am immensely grateful and joyful because of my friends this week. Their smiles, silliness, insight, struggles, and encouragement have made anything bearable. Thank you, friends.

..and actually finally, thanks be to God, who humbles, provides, lifts me up, and gives me joy when I don't deserve it. I am blessed to be provided with a new identity, as an adopted daughter of Christ. I will never understand that fully, but I'm thankful.

here's to the end of an old week, and the beginning of another.

and Kaelie, I'm thrilled for you finds. It brings me joy. And I'm glad you are surviving school and and also joining the thirst for turquoise :) This is a long post. But hopefully it let's you in to what is my life at the moment.

Speaking of Minnesota

You're gonna love and hate this, Ang. This week was full of coffee and deals. Deals and coffee. {Snoozin' and treats. Treats and snoozin'.}

Bread & Chocolate was the venue of choice to start up a new weekly college ladies prayer meeting. A handful of college gals and I decided to seek the Lord in tight-knit community. We hunger for the living God! I am blessed by the Holy Spirit's prompting in our conversation and the way the Lord glides our hearts into the ways of beauty, edification, and grace. He is teaching us to love.

Between school, homework, lacrosse practice, and attempting to balance my new social atmosphere, I find myself running to coffee as a sort of blankie I drag with me to everywhere. I've downed so many cappuccinos in the past week that my hair is beginning to look caffeinated.

I hit up Unique Thrift with Grandma yesterday. She scored fake flowers. I scored a briefcase almost identical to a vintage black Coach Angie throws over her shoulder, {but with buttery brown leather,} and a Ralph Lauren button up defining all that is raw and classic. I'll take pictures and allow you to live vicariously.
P.S. Thanks a lot, Angela, for creating a huge desire for a turquoise and silver ring. I wanted one so badly, became satisfied with my simple sterling from Ireland, then read your recent post. Ooh, turquoise. You melt my little western thumper.

I'm going to Duluth this weekend. :] {'Picking up a shift at the country club for a friend.} Hopefully I'll find myself walking the North Shore at some point.

Love from Minnesota,
Kaelie

Thrifting Withdrawal?

So I might have a problem.

I seem to have become a thrifting addict. I started early. I knew my way around Savers, Goodwill, Salvation Army and Unique Thrift before I even entered high school. Yes, before it was cool. (no I'm not a hipster exactly... I just was to thrifty to spend money at malls before thrift stores became the new malls). I must say, I've become quite a pro. But I didn't realize that until lately... when I noticed that about 80% of my closet was made of thrifted things. Actually that's what I do for fun with my friends when I have the wonderful occasion of being home and surrounded by the very best thrift stores and coffee shops (they should always go hand-in-hand). But there's a problem. New York doesn't thrift.

We have maybe... two thrift stores in the area? Perhaps there are more, but I only know of two. And they are not high quality, I've rarely found things at them. But I'm going through a thrifting withdrawal... I just want to find a good Ralph Lauren vintage men's button-down, a big cashmere scarf or an awesome vintage turquoise and silver ring. In the Midwest, those aren't hard to find. But here... not so much.

So all you back in MN and the Midwest, pretty please find a good deal for me. Tell me what wonderful treasure you found in the corner of your local Goodwill. I'm anxious for anyone who actually understands the joys of thrifting.

And Kaelie, school is going well - it's crazy, but I'm surviving and God is blessing me all the while. I'm thankful for continued friendships, new friendships, and patient and giving people. They make long nights in studio worthwhile.

First day of school! First day of school!

Life as a transfer student is its own kind of blissful awkward.
{Imagine a very happy, very clueless dandelion in a flowerbed.}
I’ve been wandering the halls back and forth all day hoping I stumble into the correct classrooms: planner in the left hand, coffee in the right hand, map in the teeth.

But. I am so blessed. The university hosts a community of believers after the heart of Jesus Christ. I have the opportunity to attend on-campus chapel as I please, am challenged to work hard and question what I believe by my professors, pray with my team before lacrosse practice, {which is often set to worship music,} and... I get my own mailbox! It's a beautiful place.

Verse on my heart:
He has shown you, O man, what is good: And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
Love from Minnesota,
Kaelie

P.S. Hey! Sup, Angela?! We have a blog--what!! {How was school, ya little trooper?}
~God, be lifted high as Ang and I travel through college. May we be ever mindful of the way of love. Set our gaze on You, Jesus. Give us a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You, that the eyes of our understanding would be opened. Amen!

last moments of freedom before the crazy

School has started for me (a whole loooong week already), but it starts for Kaelie tomorrow. Because we're just kicking around the design, content, and future if this little blogging adventure of ours, I thought I would just start with a few pictures I snapped in my last moments of freedom before the craziness started. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit one of my best friends in sunny South Carolina before I got back to New York. So here's a glimpse at my adventure there. Enjoy!
